I’ve been reading The Community of Self by Dr. Na’im Akbar. It’s a very short book in very plain language. I recommend everyone reading this to get your hands on that book and read it. I’ve only finished the first part, and already I find myself winning the inner battle that happens every time there is a difficult decision to be made.
The first part of the book breaks down the different aspects of the self and what they bring to the whole of the self. He also describes what happens when those different members of the community demand too much control and rule the community. He explains what could happen and how it could happen. This is all in very plain language, as I said above, and can be easily understood. Then he finishes it off with the member of the community that is the only logical, and correct, ruler of the self: Will. Through willpower we can achieve the most amazing of feats, whether it be quitting cigarettes or riding on a bicycle from Berkeley, California to Bahia, Brazil.
Listen to the voice. Nurture it. Your willpower is what strengthens your personality and makes you a force to be reckoned with.
