I was recently thinking about my last 5 months in San Diego. From a musical point of reference. At the time I was listening a lot to Nneka and Erykah Badu. The beginning of my Afrocentric discovery of identity and self-determination. The music was fulfilling and touched a part of me I did not know existed, at the time. I listened to their albums constantly. So it’s been quite a while since I sat down and listened to one of their CD’s all the way through.
So I was listening to the music on my Blackberry on random, and Suffri by Nneka started playing and I was instantly shifted back into that state of mind that I had discovered in San Diego. A calmness came over me and I relaxed. Now, for further clarification, this occurred at work and I had my phone in my right shirt pocket while I was working on the bar. I did not have on my headphones in order to appreciate the fullness of the sound.
The power of the music in our lives is not up for debate. Especially when one overstands the sensation of that moment in time of your life and how it has become intrinsically linked with the music that is being experienced during that period. I guess it’s time to come back round again and allow the voice of these two phenomenal women to soothe me into the right state of mind to be educated and set free from myself.
Here’s some Fela. Just because. If you need me to give you a reason to listen to Fela than you have not experienced Fela and this is your opportunity.
